It has found a very wide application in itself when used in various fields. This Operating System is used both on servers and for home stationary computers. Ubuntu has several aspects in its work, such as: desktop version, server version, version for cloud infrastructures and for embedded devices. However, the use of this operating system is very diverse, it can still be divided into two main types – Ubuntu Server and Ubuntu Desktop, which are the most popular and demanded among Ubuntu fans.

Before we start comparing Ubuntu OS Desktop and Server, there is one factor to consider. What is the difference between a server and an ordinary work computer? Servers come in two main form factors: Tower and Rackmount. A tower server is much the same as a regular work computer, but its components are designed for durability, stability and security. For example, servers use RAM that supports Error Code Correcting (ECC) functionality, which is not used in conventional computers. Rackmount servers are housed in racks of multiple servers on one.

An important fact. The working desktop version of Ubuntu is intended for the end user of the system, who needs to use the Ubuntu OS functionality on his PC. In turn, the server version of server ubuntu was ultimately oriented for easy management by the server administrator.

Ubuntu OS Applications

One of the main differences between the Ubuntu server version and the desktop version is the availability of applications. Using Ubuntu Desktop you can use standard applications to work. It can be multimedia, browsers, office programs and more. Unlike the server version of Ubuntu, this is only the presence of basic programs. All of them are required for the server to work. These can be applications such as the following:

web server,

DNS server.

mail server,

file server,

special packages for managing cloud infrastructure.

The filesystem utilities btrfs, curl, and xfs, as well as lvm, the lxd container hypervisor, and programs for configuring RAID.

Ubuntu OS GUI

An important point to note is the graphical interface. After all, this is the main difference between the Ubuntu server and the desktop version, and also the presence of a desktop environment. When it was analyzed, then the absolute majority of distributions that work through Ubuntu OS, you can install a graphical shell for the server, but by default it is not there. And some are not designed to be used in conjunction with a graphical interface at all. For example, the CoreOS distribution for containers only has a command line. Your personal desktop Ubuntu OS comes with the Gnome GUI by default.

However, if you wish, you have the option to switch to the X or KDE version of the desktops. With the server version, the default GUI, as noted, is not installed. The server is not designed to interact with locally other than for normal maintenance, and the GUI is not only unnecessary, but it can also consume resources that would otherwise need to be available to the server. The same is true for other programs like office, media players, browsers and many more. None of these programs can be found in the server version.

Another important note is that there is one very important component. Open forums such as askubuntu find one very important point. The “server” CD does not include what Ubuntu considers desktop packages (such as X, Gnome, or KDE), but does include server-specific packages (Apache2, Bind9, etc.). Using a desktop CD with a minimal setup and installation, such as apache2 from the web, you can get exactly the same result as you can get by inserting the server CD and installing apache2 from the CD.

The installation process for Ubuntu Server Edition is slightly different from the Desktop Edition. Since there is no GUI on the Ubuntu server by default, this process is menu driven, much like installing from an alternate CD.

Interestingly, Ubuntu 12.04 installs a server-optimized kernel by default. Since 12.04 there is no kernel difference between Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server as linux-image-server is merged with linux-image-generic.

For Ubuntu LTS versions prior to 12.04, Ubuntu OS Desktop Edition only receives support for 3 years. In Ubuntu LTS 12.04, this time was increased to 5 years. In contrast, all Ubuntu LTS Server Editions are supported for 5 years. The Ubuntu server comes with the essentials to get the job done. As for the similarities between the server version and the desktop version, the server version uses the same application repositories. The same version is used for the desktop version as well.

The Ubuntu OS distribution is the most popular among others in Linux.
